The Republic of Moldova celebrates 35 years since declaring independence from the USSR on 27 August. On this occasion, deputies of the first Parliament of independent Moldova asked President Maia Sandu to complete the project of union with Romania.
„Today, honourable Madam President, you hold the crown in your hands, with every right and blessing to place it on the act of the reunification of the Romanian nation”, said deputy Alexandru Arseni, one of the signatories of the Declaration of Independence.
President Maia Sandu called on society to work together to put Moldova under the shelter of the EU: „Our independence is tested every day. To succeed, we must be united, know our history, celebrate our heroes… To succeed, we must work together to put the Republic of Moldova under the shelter of the EU.”
The pro-Russian Socialists, led by Igor Dodon — under investigation for high treason in favour of Russia — boycotted the solemn session, accusing the PAS government of admitting the possibility of renouncing sovereignty through union with Romania.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Romanian President Nicușor Dan are expected in Chișinău on 27 August. Over 2,000 troops, including from Ukraine, Romania and the US, will parade in the capital’s centre.
