Iran has announced it will wait for an official US response after President Donald Trump rejected a proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, a critical waterway for global oil transportation. The Iranian government stated that it remains open to negotiations but will not accept any threats to its sovereignty.
„We have presented our proposal in good faith. Now we await the official American response. Iran will not be pressured or threatened. The Strait of Hormuz is a vital waterway, and we have the right to control access in accordance with international law”, said an Iranian foreign ministry spokesperson.
Trump rejected the Iranian proposal on Saturday, calling it a „total violation” of the ceasefire agreement. The US president said Iran had „decided to fire bullets” and accused Tehran of bad faith in negotiations.
The Strait of Hormuz, a narrow stretch of water between Iran, the UAE and Oman, handles about 20% of the world’s oil traffic. Iran has maintained a blockade on the strait for nearly two months, causing global energy prices to soar. The US has responded with its own blockade of Iranian ports.
„The US will not lift its blockade until a deal has been reached with Iran. Our position is clear: no deal, no Hormuz”, Trump stated in a press conference from the White House.
International observers express growing concern over the escalating situation. The United Nations Security Council has called for restraint from both sides and urged a return to diplomatic negotiations. China and Russia have also voiced concerns about the impact on global energy markets.
Oil prices have risen by approximately 15% since the blockade began, affecting economies worldwide. Analysts warn that a prolonged closure of the Strait of Hormuz could trigger a global recession. Both sides remain entrenched in their positions, with no clear path to resolution in sight.
